Philly sports and frustration is where it’s at tonight!

Stunned G got suspended, considering his record and the game’s importance. Worse have gotten off with less, and I’m annoyed with this strange dart-board style of handing out penalties.

Just some thoughts.

The things that frustrate me in this series are the things that frustrate me about the Flyers in general. Everything we do seems to be momentum driven. Maybe that’s a function of being a young team — and I get that. This is a very new experience for a lot of these guys,  and that’s fine. Sometimes even more than fine. In the best occassions, it works for us, carries us, makes us more likely to score when we’re behind and fight tooth and nail when we feel we’re the underdogs. 

But the flip side of that is what we’re seeing now — when we’re beaten mentally, it seems almost impossible for us to get our engines going again. As a team, we become unfocused, sloppy, and lose battles we’re perfectly capable of winning. I’m not sure what this stems from. Coming into this series, maybe we were too high off the series we were ‘supposed’ to lose. Maybe we had too long to rest, and rest became rust. Maybe we were just, well, spent. But whatever it comes from, it results in the team we’re seeing now. The guys who are playing are getting desperate, and while desperation as a team can result in stellar play, desperation from single players doesn’t work as well. More often than not, it leads to frustration being misdirected into stupid penalties. 

So, Flyers, now what? When you play like you don’t care, when you play sloppy, when your demeanor tells everyone watching that you’re already halfway beaten, what can be done? We can’t just keep letting our opponents get their foot in the door because we’ve opened it for them. We’re capable of winning. We CAN win. Talent is not our issue. We’re not perfect, no. Our D can be outclassed, yes. But we have played with those problems this entire season and proven that we can win — when our heads are right. 

So get them right, Flyers. Because if you don’t do it now — hell, yesterday — it’s looking like we’re fast approaching a long offseason to think about it.
